Uterine Endometrial Ablation
Endometrial ablation is used to control prolonged, heavy vaginal bleeding when childbearing is complete, you prefer not to have a hysterectomy (or there are medical reasons why a hysterectomy is not ideal) and when the bleeding has not responded well to other medical treatments.
Endometrial ablation is used to destroy the lining of the uterus (endometrium) with the goal of reducing or completely stopping extremely heavy menstrual flow. There is no need for an incision and the procedure can be done by:
- Heat (thermal ablation) – Radiofrequency, Thermal Balloon Ablation, or Normal Saline
- Laser Beam (laser thermal ablation)
- Electricity (through the use of a resectoscope)
Healthy Choice OB/GYN reviews several factors, including the size, shape and condition of your uterus to determine which ablation method is most ideal for your situation.
Several options are available to reduce or stop the heavy flow but endometrial ablation may be your best options if methods like medication or an IUD are not helping.
After the procedure is complete, you may experience side effects like cramping, nausea and discharge and it usually takes a few days to recover – however most patients are able to go home the same day as the procedure.
